Montrose Youth Vs Dundee West 2008 Royals

Cup Final - Dundee West Anniversary Cup

Sunday's fixture saw Dundee West 2008 Royals competing in their first ever final, and with it being the Dundee West anniversary cup it was even more meaningful for them to win this!

Montrose were a worthy opponent to meet in the final and so it would prove as for long spells of the first half they certainly created the best chances and if it hadn't been for some heroics from goal keeper Kyle Wilson, including a world class save from a thunder bolt of a shot heading for the top corner which he unbelievably tipped over the bar, the outcome might have been different.

But Dundee West weathered the storm and after a few missed chances of their own they managed to get their noses in front 5 minutes before the break when Flynn Carmichael won the ball on the left side and quickly sent the ball through for Harry Welsh to run onto who then took a touch to round the keeper at the edge of the box and fire the ball into the empty net. A much needed boost for the West to go in at the break 0-1 up.

HT 0-1

Within a minute of the restart Dundee West doubled their lead when a superb kick from keeper Kyle Wilson bounced over the Montrose defence and Harry Welsh raced on to it closely followed by Robbie Gilchrist, the Montrose keeper did very well to keep out Harry's shot but could do nothing to stop Robbie netting the rebound (0-2).

Montrose threw everything at Dundee West in order to get back into the game but were thwarted time and time again by the defence which was very well organised by captain Jack Davidson, in his first game back in a while after suffering a fractured wrist, and alongside him Luca Robertson and Mark Valentine put in a masterclass of defending. Michael Gray also who was given the job of keeping Montrose's main goal threat quiet did exactly what was asked of him.

The relentless pressure from Montrose opened them up to counter attacks however and this was proved to be the case when Callum Luke, who capped off a braveheart performance playing through the pain barrier, played a brilliant through ball to Harry Welsh who showed great compusure to lob the onrushing keeper from 20 yards and with only 3 minutes left on the clock this seemed to be the killer goal (0-3), but 2 minutes later Dundee West made doubly sure when Harry Welsh made a great turn on the bi-line and cut back into the box to find Charlie Webster who by his own admission just closed his eyes and hoped for the best but for himself, his teammates and all the Dundee West supporters they were all delighted to see the ball hit the net and seal the title as Dundee West anniversary cup champions (0-4).

FT 0-4.

This goes to show a great team ethic and contributes to this success and here's hoping to more in the future.
