Today marked the return to football following the October break with a visit for the Reds to Fairfield to take on a very strong St James side. Due to low numbers for St James the game was an 8 aside match rather than 9.
The Reds started with a 2-4-1 formation with a diamond midfield. The formation paid off when the Reds took the lead after 10 minutes. Oorlagh playing as a number 10 received the ball outside the box she looked up towards Lacy on the right wing and took a touch towards her but instead played an amazing no look reverse pass left straight into the feet of Layla on the left who slotted the ball into the corner. A fantastic goal to start a high scoring game which ended up with 15 goals altogether. The Reds scored again minutes later. Taylor replaced Lacy out on the right and scored within a minute of being on the pitch. Daisys goal kick bounced up off the astro turf to Devon on the left who timed her jump well flicking it with a fine header to Layla. Layla showed great strength and foot work in the corner. Laylas cross was blocked but rolled to Taylor who made no mistake blasting it into the bottom left corner. The third followed when Evie played a firm pass into Devon, Devon’s touch was excellent and she cushioned the ball off to Layla who hammered the ball high into the net. St James were causing the Reds real problems though particularly playing through their striker who had an excellent game. St James scored two goals in quick succession to get back into the game and would have equalised if it wasn’t for a fantastic finger tip save from Daisy on to the bar.
The second half began and St James did quickly equalised through great solo play from their striker. Not to be outdone within seconds Layla put the Reds back into the lead with a terrific solo run up the wing cutting inside before finishing at the near post. The reds increased their lead again however with good passing between Devon and Lacy on the edge of the box which saw Lacy set Devon up to curl a shot into the top corner. St James came back again though as the game swung from end to end scoring to bring them back within a goal. Layla and Oorlagh linked up on a corner and Layla picked out Lacy perfectly with a hard low cross which Lacy connected with cleverly at the back post to finish. Layla and Neave both dropped deeper and the Reds changed their formation to cope with the strong St James side. The change meant Oorlagh, Lacy and Devon were now the front three to finish the game. Layla played a pass up the right to Oorlagh who played a perfect cross into Devon who had timed her run and finished confidently into the bottom corner. St James came back again scoring two quick goals in keeping with an exhilarating match this meant the game was back with the Reds only a goal ahead. The Reds responded however with the best goal of the game. Daisy passed the ball to Oorlagh who cut inside and switched the ball to the left wing, Devon knocked the ball back to Taylor who played it back across the pitch to Oorlagh. Oorlagh slipped in Lacy who crossed for Devon and she finished to score a fantastic team goal from start to finish. The final goal of the game came when Layla cleared and Lacy sprinted into the corner. Lacy passed the ball back to Oorlagh who played a driven pass straight to Devon who again finished this time with her left foot.
A superb competitive girls game played in good spirit with some terrific individual performances and team play from both teams. Well Done to St James for their efforts and another great showing from the Reds.
Oorlagh was todays player of the match with an outstanding performance.
